REVIEW | The Beautiful – Renée Ahdieh

First book of the year finished!!! I stayed up way too late to finish it – not caring for future Hannah who had work this morning…

No matter where she went, danger followed.

And it horrified her. Just as it thrilled her.

So I originally rated this 5 stars on completing it. I’d flown through it – it’s the first book in a long time I’ve devoured in a day – and the story was enjoyable. But I think it’s more 4/4.5 upon thinking of it.

I love the mystery surrounding the characters, but also – I think the mystery wasn’t really cleared up much either and I’m still in the dark. There’s a looming menace throughout, and an unflinching female lead. The setting of 19th century New Orleans gave me vibes of Interview With a Vampire – a film I love, although I’ve never read the book, sorry!

French and Spanish sentences and phrases are peppered throughout – whilst I love they’re there, it added to the feel and effect of the book, I don’t speak them… They took me out of the story while I looked them up on Google translate…

I’m left with a few questions, and one of the final scenes has left me confused over whether I’ve missed something in the story. But I’m definitely looking forward to delving into the next book, The Damned, when I can.

  1. My first read was The Name of the Dead, an espionage revenge story. It was one of the Amazon First Reads that became available and because of the holiday yesterday I was able to quickly read it. It feels really good to already have at least one book on my Goodreads 2020 challenge done!

About Me

Books and food enthusiast. I discovered a love for reading in my late teens, so you’ll see me catching up on older series quite often. I also love to travel around the UK, where I live, and picking up some crafty hobbies – I hope to share snippets of this amongst all the book content. Other interests include gaming, podcasts, drinking too much tea, and trying to personify autumn.
