My reading goals for 2023

Twenty twenty three - the bookworms feast. Set against a picture from the library in National Trust Blickling.

Hello! Long time again eh? These past few months I have not done well physically or mentally. I will be so glad to see the back of 2022 – I hope 2023 is better, and my immune system much improved after being a hermit for two years and then subjecting myself to the office haha. It’s been rough. I hope everyone else has been faring better with the return to “normality”… I think change can be a good thing to be honest (well, it does terrify me too haha) and would rather not go back, at least completely, in this instance. But the world obviously doesn’t agree with me.

So, after that little bit kind of explaining where I’ve been. What are my goals?

*thinking*

2022 has been a rough year of reading for me – I’ve struggled to find the joy I used to with books, and even just thinking about reading was something I often didn’t want tot do this last half year. So with that in mind, I just want to be way more chill. Not feel the pressure to read, to not feel the pressure to post, and the bit that really seems to suck the joy away for me is the combined pressure of reading something so I can post about something.

I’m still going to keep a spreadsheet going, and probably use Goodreads still to track what I do read – as I’m such a freaking nerd, and I love stats haha. For the Goodreads Reading Challenge Goal, I am going to aim for 26 books (roughly one every 2 weeks). This is low compared to the last few years, very low. But I have a couple of book clubs I want to keep up with, so I’d like to hit those, if nothing else.

As I mention, I’ve already built a spreadsheet I plan to use this year to statisfy my nerdy soul – this years iteration is inspired by something Hannah @LadetteM is doing, and has a heavy focus on the books I own, and what what I’m hauling and unhauling. I always joke about how out of control my TBR is – but I think it’s starting to bother me and feel totally unmanageable. I need to do something about it for the sake of my mental health. I don’t even enjoy the other hobby we all joke about having – buying books – anymore. I’m just too overwhelmed. I’ve stopped a couple of subscriptions for 2023 – this month being my last Illumicrate and Fairyloot books. I’ve kept Goldsboro, but I won’t lie, that may go too yet.

With that in mind, I’d like my physical owned TBR to be 100 books smaller. This is massive, I really don’t know if I’ll make it (or anywhere close). But I need to fix my hoarding tendencies and just let go of books I have no interest in reading any more. Some have been there for over a decade and still haven’t been read – I think it’s highly likely they’ll remain that way if I hold onto them… Maybe I’ll swap them for a kindle version if I’m unsure.

I may add some more goals to list – but I think too many and it’d no longer be chill haha. So that’s it, that’s my list. It feels like it’ll be a year of quiet downsizing my TBR – rather than trying to go at it hard and failing epically.

What goals do you have for 2023?

Wishing you a wonderful New Year,

Signed, Hannah x

  3. I’m sorry this year hasn’t been the best for you, Hannah. Wishing 2023 will be better.
It is an ongoing progress for me too, to not feel guilty for not reading. This December, I finished three books so far, I just wasn’t in the mood, and there’s no need to feel bad about it. It’s just hard sometimes. I hope you’ll find the joy of reading again, without any added pressure. Good luck with downsizing your own tbr!

About Me

Books and food enthusiast. I discovered a love for reading in my late teens, so you’ll see me catching up on older series quite often. I also love to travel around the UK, where I live, and picking up some crafty hobbies – I hope to share snippets of this amongst all the book content. Other interests include gaming, podcasts, drinking too much tea, and trying to personify autumn.
