reading goals for twenty-twenty-four

Hello! I hope you’re well 🤗

Today, let’s talk about goals for next year (while also seeing how I did this year).

I said back in my post for my 2023 goals that I wanted to take this year more chill. I definitely did that, and it did bring me back some of the joy of reading again. In 2024 I want to keep building on that – I’m going to still keep it low key and low effort.

I’ve made my usual spreadsheet tracker for the year, and its a bit more simplified than previous years. And I’m setting my Goodreads goal as 52 – correlating to one book a week, which is double what I set for 2023 (and absolutely smashed), but I should still hit it with no issues if I do pick up some books each month (and with a couple of readathons). But I shouldn’t be rushing to do so.

Unhauling was a big focus for me this year, and I did do amazingly (especially as all I’d done previously was hoard with no unhauling – I must be up to around 150 books unhauled!) – but my books still somehow don’t all fit on my shelves, so my new goal is to just get down to a level where all my physical books do fit on my bookcases.

I did set a goal last year to reduce my physical tbr by around 100 books, I didn’t make that, as I bought too many (as per usual – book subscriptions do not help at all!). I don’t think I want to set another goal around that for 2024, but I have cancelled a few subs, so hopefully I’ll naturally shrink a bit if I do keep up with the unhauling.

A goal I sort of set myself during the year was to work on finishing some series – I looked at how many I have ongoing, and it is over 175… I finished 3 series this year, so I’m setting a goal for 2024 of 5. It’s not quite double, but again, I don’t want to stress myself out over them.

And then a genre I have neglected this year is classics. I want to pick up two new, to me, classic books this year. If you have some to recommend, or just another books in general – I’d also like to give a go the 24 in 24, as some extra motivation to pick up a book (and as its recommended by you, some really good books too). So please recommend me some books!

I might tack a couple extras on – I’m not sure. I’m feeling like I want to plan a bit more, as readathons etc. do motivate me to some degree. So surely a bit of planning will do too, right? But as I mentioned right at the start, I still want to keep it fairly chill still.

TL;DR?

This year, I did amazingly well at unhauling, but failed at reducing my tbr as I bought too many new ones.

Next years goals are:

  • 52 books
  • Physical books actually fit on my shelves
  • Catch up on / finish 5 series
  • Read at least 2 classics
  • 24 in 24 challenge (please send some recommendations my way!)

What goals do you have for 2024?

Wishing you a wonderful New Year,

Signed, Hannah x

  1. You have some great reading goals. Classics I’d recommend are Wuthering Heights and Frankenstein.

  2. Ah, thank you!! 😄 I read Wuthering Heights years ago and it wasn’t for me – I think I need to give it another go, as my tastes have definitely changed.

  3. I second Wuthering Heights Frankenstein! And Dracula is really good as well! You enjoy Austen, so if you haven’t tried out L. M. Montgomery’s books yet, definitely do so! Anne of Green Gables or if you don’t want to start another series 😂, then A Tangled Web or The Blue Castle.
By the way, you did pretty well with your 2023 goals! Good luck with next year’s as well!

  5. Good luck for your reading goals and congrats on your 2023 accomplishments! I also need to work on my physical TBR — I meant to unhaul this year but then I stopped buying books (which is a yay) so I didn’t have the pressing reminder that I had no shelf space haha.

    1. Ah that’s incredible! I keep attempting that, but suck at self restraint 🙈 hopefully we both make some headway with our tbrs 😄

  6. Oh wow, unhauling 100 books?? I could never xD I also haven’t been reading any classics in the past 2 years, but I’d love to pick it up again this year and been eyeing Orlando by Virginia Woolf 🙂

  7. I’m always in awe of people who actually manage to set realistic goals for themselves because I most definitely never do 🤣 But congrats on doing so well with your 2023 goals, and good luck on the 2024 ones!

Also, I love classics, so obviously I’ve got recs for you! I’m not sure which ones you’ve already read, but some of my personal favorites are Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë, Emma by Jane Austen, basically anything by Edgar Allan Poe… If you want more, just hit me up!

    1. Haha, I don’t often hit them, no matter how realistic. It usually seems like if I set it as a goal, I will now actively avoid doing it 🙈😂

And thank you! I adore Jane Eyre 😍 it’s definitely one of my favourites too! Emma is the only Austen I haven’t read, so will get on that, and I keep putting Poe off for some reason. And I haven’t heard of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, so that’s going on the list!

      Wishing you a wonderful 2024!

  8. Good luck with your goals! I’ll recommend a few just in case I mention something you’ve already read: Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus, Remnants of a Separation by Aanchal Malhotra, If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio.

Hope you have a lovely 2024!

And I have if we were villains but haven’t read it yet! I will definitely get a move on!! Thank you 😄

  9. Happy reading! As for numbers, my goal is to read at least 12 books and I want to minimize my tbr pile + buy less books and go to the library more regularly again.

  10. NO BUT YOUVE ACHIEVED SO MUCH OKAY!!! also unhauling 150 books is just downright insane 😭 but OHMYGOSH HAPPY NEW YEAR AND I HOPE YOU HAVE THE BEST 2024!!!!! GOOD LUCK ON ALL YOUR GOALS.

also for the recs. AHEM. will put in like a couple because i cannot be stopped when asked for recs.

    1. for classics, definitely anne of green gables (IT’S LITERALLY THE SWEETEST BOOK IN EXISTENCE OKAY) and little women (THE CHARACTERS OWN MY HEART) they’re both AMAZING and pretty much the only classics i’ve ever loved i think? (although, in my defense, i havent read that many)
    2. not my problem by ciara smyth (it has THE BEST HUMOR. like i SWEAR. there’s nothing like it) but going along with the humorous books thing, there’s also vera wong’s unsolicited advice for murderers (IT WILL HAVE YOU CACKLING) and i kissed shara wheeler (which, i guess, is more sassy and badass than plain humorous BUT DEFINITELY STILL THE BEST)
    3. for fantasy, six of crows if you havent read it yet, and our crooked hearts, lies of the ajungo and this savage song!!
    4. and if you’re into nonfiction, this will hurt by adam kay and maybe you should talk to someone by lori gottlieb.

    ANYWAY. HAVE THE BEST TIME!!!
